The Miyako Islands consist of eight large and small islands (Miyako Island, Irabu Island, Shimoji Island, Ikema Island, Kurima Island, Ogami Island, Tarama Island, and Minna Island) floating in the ocean approximately 330 km southwest of the main island of Okinawa. The main island, Miyakojima, is a flat, triangular island with raised coral reefs, and is the economic, administrative, and transportation center, and is famous for hosting triathlons. Once you leave the vibrant townscape unique to the tropics, the contrast between the green sugar cane fields and the deep blue sky gives you a sense of the island’s atmosphere.
