オニテングハギは、岩礁・サンゴ礁域に生息する。体側背部が隆起することが特徴の一つ。
前頭部には「天狗の鼻」のような角状突起が発達するが、これは雄個体のみの特徴で、雌個体では発達しない。
このオニテングハギは、体長１ｍ超で立派な角のある雄です。
